If I may nitpick a little, the narration about the big crash has an error. All three drivers were not trapped in their cars; in the footage immediately after the crash you can see Bay Darnell running to the infield. Darnell wasn't too badly burned but Brown's injuries ended his career. And one of the ironies of this accident is that Ronnie Duman and Norm Brown were both from Michigan, and were long-time friends.
Watching this live on TV was incredibly depressing. I just got out of the army, trying to adjust & relax in the 'Real World' as a civilian once again. Then this happened. A direct hit of reality stunned me. I then thought _'My God, if Foyt is retiring, that means Johncock, Rutherford and Andretti won't be far behind to step away from the wheel..."_ Good grief that was hard to take.
Mel Kenyon came back after a horrible fiery crash at langhorn Pennsylvania and was burnt very badly...he lost all of the fingers on his right hand..he was back at the Indy 500 the following year and finished 3rd I believe...and Mel has won more midget features than anyone in the history of midget racing...
The pole speed was 2.5 mph faster than the pole at Indy. Shav Glick, who covered motorsports for the Los Angeles Times, told me that Ontario was so far ahead of its time that even int he 2000s it would have been one of the best facilities in the country. I would loved to have seen it.
I’m surprised you’re uploading USAC’s highlight vids
What a legend
in the days of the giants and ledgends, dave pepperak as of this year still races in 2024 though usually seems just one or 2 silvercrown races though many are still alive its unfortunate rich isn't
Must of been said before but if there is a ghost at Indy it's bill . Haunting.
I went to the ARCA and Truck race at IRP for the last 3 years, and never knew about these Jags race here!!
It looks to me that the Offset Big Block Super Modified's would have a major advantage on the high banks of 1/2 mile Winchester Speedway.
This is the race track where J.C. Agajanian spotted the great Parnelli Jones and felt that he was going to be good enough to drive at Indianapolis. Parnelli drove for Aggie for all but one of his USAC Championship Car races. That one race was the 1967 Indy 500 when Parnelli drove for Andy Granatelli in the "Whoosh Mobile" Paxton Turbine car, coming within three laps of victory when the car lost its drive due to the failure of a $6.00 transmission bearing. Parnelli retired from driving IndyCars at the end of the season. RIP Roofus Parnell Jones Gone at the age of 90 years.
To me, Foyt is like Trump. I like them both. But can't stand to listen to either of them talk.
Thank you for sharing
Great piece of history
Shilling drove up on Richy .... GET outta the way
Bullshit - Rich Vogler was Up on the Inside - Other driver got too close to try to push him back - Rich did his great racing!!!!
This is such an interesting clip. Gordon hadn't yet been taught how to polish himself for TV, but he was a quick learner. Who would have thought, watching this, that in a few years he would be one of NASCAR's greatest?
I hated broadcasts in those days. How could they leave the race in progress? Yet it happened all the time.
These are the cars of my childhood. I had a huge print of Mario's #5 car on my wall growing up.
Is the audio real in this one?
The greatest ever PERIOD !

The most amazing thing I saw AJ do was after this was filmed. In 1997 Scott Sharp was driving for AJ and in practice he hit the wall out of turn four at Indy. Sharp was knocked out and the throttle was stuck on as the car slid most of the way down the front straight, engine roaring and smoke pouring off the left rear tire. The car came to rest aginst the outside wall across from the pits with the engine still roaring and the left tire still smoking and AJ went into action. He RAN across pit lane, jumped high enough to get one foot on the top of the inside wall and went over the wall on to the front straight. He continued running and got to Sharp long before anyone else and went through the thick smoke to hit the kill switch and shut off the engine. About 30 seconds later the safety crew arrived to take over. All that from an old man with 5 pounds of steel holding his legs together. That day he was 'Super Tex'.
Thanks for the great video!!
Great video! Used to watch the ESPN Thunder series each night it was on.. RIp Rich Vogler
Look at that crowd! There had to be 50k at Pocono for a Saturday ARCA Race/Second Day Qualifying....
Wow 35 starts. That is incredible especially through the dangerous eras
I could watch stories like this all day🏆🏆
I still like INDYCAR these days However it was funner to watch in my opinion when it was full of regular -blue collard American racers. You seemed to care more how their day went. Good video here
Graham Hill lost a wheel at Indy and Leonard lost one a week later. Was it a big surprise that the 1969 Lotus Indy cars had to withdraw because of wheel hub failures? I know Ronnie Duman's grandson and always feel sick when I see how Ronnie died. He was the last driver to join the Champion 100 Mile Per Hour Club. His grandson's father was also from a racing family and Indy driver Chet Gardner was a great Uncle.
who came here after cleetus indy 800 mention
Now watching this in 24 hearing them talk about it while watching Cleetus Indy 800
terre haute crash ,worst i ever saw, even worse than when he sailed out of belleville
Drivers today have no clue just how dangerous this sport was compared to today. And its still dangerous. And racing still can and will kill. It just comes with the territory
Wow cool story about the ol #20 car and its best driver Bob Frey ....I'm a little bias since Bob is my uncle I have a lot of memories of racing when Bob drove for my Grandfather......Good times !
I have the official racing program from this race. Bought it on ebay for less than $10 twenty years ago.😊
Great purchase
Woah weird to see a 70’s sprint with down tubing
I grew up going to these races with my Dad and 2 brothers. Sat on the hillside between turns 3 & 4 and would run to the pits after the race ended. Miss this time in my life and the excitement of the 1 mile oval. Thanks Charles for keeping these alive.
Pancho is super hero also .
O p p is super hero ! ❤😢😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
thanks for sharing! brings back memories
7:47 Ongais' 800 lap led in the '78 season to that point ..🤯🤯
23:43 AJ laughing about him being unconscious for 45 min...lol
Its weird hearing/seeing all these names together. it's like it isn't possible. So many flat out legends and winners...but they are all racing together. Safe to say these years from the early 70s thru the mid to late 80s will never be duplicated as far as talent. Good lord 👀🤯🤯
Never got to see Jan race, but did get to see Jack Hewitt at our local dirt track down here in Florida. GOD BLESS them both.
❤. Love. Wins. ! 🎉😊🎉
Seen Opperman race in 76 at Sky Valley Speedway ...Seen Wolfgang race in 1980. Opperman in my books was the best Sprint Car Driver in my books. A true outlaw raced prior to the makings of The World of Outlaws..)
Not just a racer. heard him called borderline Genius more than once. Made jeff Bodie cry for building a car under rule book. Way inside the rules. Rule on minimum size no rule on maximum size, or airo inside the car. Competition were building pintos and gremlins. Kenny built a Lincoln 😊
Benny was a national treasure. When I was a kid, I got his autograph at an event in Valley Forge. He had a huge smile on his face and he was just super happy and friendly with everybody... a genuinely great guy
1 Lap . ! Paul Newman was 1 lap away from being in the Guiness Book of World Records as the Oldest driver EVER ( 73 ) from Winning a Professional Motorsport race. 12 Hours of Sebring I believe . He ran out of Gas on the last lap.
Vogler got what was coming to him the next year, after stuff like this and his Indy 500 bump day theatrics and probably numerous other incidents in his career.
